Program notes:

Scintillation is the Western scientific term for the phenomenon of stars twinkling. There are 6 factors that cause scintillation, and therefore 6 factors that astrophysicists must watch out for in order to collect clean and accurate data. They are: clear, dark, cold, high, dry, and calm skies. In other scientific practices, however, this twinkling is not a hinderance but a tool for understanding atmospheric conditions. This symphonic work pays homage to each of these factors in turn, heralded by the opening movement which evokes the playful, imp-like character of the stars as they sparkle and evade detection.
